Relations between WCCES and UNESCO in debate at the XVII World Congress of Comparative Education
In the framework of the XVII World Congress of Comparative Education, which is taking place in Riviera Maya, Mexico, from May 20 to 24, a plenary panel was held which, on the pretext of the Jubilee of WCCES (World Council for Comparative Education Societies) at UNESCO, discussed the future of this partnership and UNESCO itself.
The following speakers participated in the panel, coordinated by N’Dri Assié-Lumumba, president of WCCES:
- Carlos Alberto Torres, Past President of WCCES and holder of a UNESCO Chair at UCLA, US
- Zehavit Gross, Chair of the Advisory Board of the WCCES Publications Standing Committee, who is also the UNESCO Chair in Education for Human Values, Tolerance, Democracy & Peace, University of Tel Aviv
- Cristian Perez Centeno, member of the Executive Bureau and the Argentine Society of Comparative Education
- António Teodoro, Chair of the Constitutional Standing Committee of WCCES and chair of the Portuguese society SPCE-SEC.
This panel was commented by Lauren Ila Misiaszek, WCCES general secretary.
António Teodoro made a short but incisive presentation on UNESCO’s loss of influence in the international arena in the field of education policies, in favor of the (almost) asphyxiating presence of the OECD, and the need to rebalance the international debate.
